Wetland Evaluations
James is a certified wetland evaluator who has completed training under the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System by the Ministry of Natural Resources. He has completed full wetland evaluations at several wetlands across the province, near Peterborough, Sarnia, Grand Bend, Kingston and Niagara. He has also participated on numerous wetland staking exercises with various conservation authorities and MNRF staff.
Single Property Conformity Assessments
James can complete Natural Heritage assessments for single residential developments on private lots where conformity with the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan or the Greenbelt Plan are required. He can also conduct Butternut assessments as he is a certified Butternut Assessor.
Wildlife Surveys
James has extensive experience conducting a range of wildlife surveys for inventory, population monitoring or determining presence, particularly for birds, reptiles, amphibians and some taxa of insects (e.g. lepidoptera). He has conducted numerous point counts, transects and area searches as part of breeding bird surveys. He is experienced with amphibian calling counts, mark-recapture surveys, snake surveys, butterfly counts and moth trapping. James has extensive knowledge with Ontario’s reptile and amphibian species with first hand field experience with nearly all species. He is qualified to conduct nest surveys when vegetation clearing is required.
Botanical Inventories
James has conducted complete botanical and biophysical inventories for several parks and protected areas in Ontario which entails first classifying the vegetation communities (usually Ecological Land Classification), documenting all of the plant species by respective habitat and assessing status. Some of the sites he has inventoried include Pelee Island, Awenda Provincial Park, Rouge Park, Todmorden Mills Park Toronto, Camden East Alvar and Queen Elizabeth Wildlands Provincial Park.
Species Status Assessments & Recovery Plans
James can complete status assessments on a range of wildlife species. He has written a COSEWIC status report on the Queen Snake, and a provincial status on the Northern Dusky Salamander a recovery plan for Eastern Fox and Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes. He was commissioned to prepare a report on the anticipated impact of climate change on amphibians in Great Lakes marshes for Environment Canada.
